legal education for entrepreneurs, in plain English. Free

The newsletter for business owners who read before they sign.

  • Sonya Szabo is a business lawyer and the founder of Zābo Law Professional Corporation. She's licensed to practise law in Ontario and specializes in business law for entrepreneurs and small businesses of all types.

Before law school, Sonya earned her first degree in business and used it to run her own business successfully. That experience shapes how she practises. She knows what it feels like to need legal help and not know where to start. She built Zābo Law to be the firm she wished existed when she was the one sitting across the table.

  • Besides being a fully virtual firm, three things that really set Zābo Law apart.

First, plain language. Every document, every email, every explanation is written so you can actually understand it — no jargon, no Latin, no condescension.

Second, flat-fee pricing. You know what you're paying before work begins. No surprise invoices.

Third, specialization. Zābo Law works exclusively with small businesses and ambitious entrepreneurs. This isn't a general practice that squeezes business clients between family law and real estate files. It's built for you and your dreams.

  • Zābo Law is a licensed Ontario law firm, so the legal advice and documents we provide are governed by Ontario law and Canadian federal law. If your business is incorporated or operating in Ontario, you're in the right place.

If you're based elsewhere in Canada, some services like contract drafting and privacy policies may still apply to your situation. The best way to know for sure is to book a free 20-minute call, and we'll be upfront with you about what we can and can't help with.

  • The Start Right Business Kit is the starting point for businesses that want to get their legal structure right from day one.

It's built around incorporation — the legal step that separates your personal finances from your business finances. When you incorporate, your personal assets are no longer on the line if your business runs into trouble. It also opens up tax planning strategies that aren't available to sole proprietors.

The package includes the incorporation itself, a digital minute book, CRA registration (including HST if needed), a standard Shareholders' Agreement and bylaws, and a 30-minute post-incorporation call so you understand exactly what you now have and what comes next.

The service is $995 plus HST and government fees, with a turnaround of 7 business days.

  • All Zābo Law services are flat-fee. You know the price before you commit to anything.

Here's a general sense of what services cost:

Incorporation (Start-Right Legal Kit) starts at $995 plus HST and government fees. Contract drafting starts at $800 plus HST. Terms of Service and Privacy Policies start at $397 plus HST. Custom contract packages are priced based on scope.

For most products, we do not offer hourly billing or retainers. You pay for what you need, and the price doesn't change once we've agreed on it.

  • Yes. Zābo Law offers a free 20-minute call before you commit to anything. It's a chance to ask questions, discuss your needs, and see if we're a good fit.

There's no pressure and no pitch. If we're not the right fit for your situation, we'll tell you that too.

To book, simply head to the contact page and choose a time that works for you.

  • That's a great starting point — and a good reason to get a second set of eyes on them.

Many businesses come to Zābo Law with contracts they've drafted themselves, templates they downloaded online, or agreements they inherited from a previous lawyer. Sometimes those documents are solid. Sometimes they have gaps that aren't obvious until something goes wrong.

A contract review can tell you where you stand. If what you have is working, great. If it needs updating, you'll know exactly what to change and why.

  • Incorporation through the Start-Right Legal Kit typically takes 7 business days from your intake call to your post-incorporation training meeting. That assumes you're responsive to requests for information — the timeline depends on both of us.

Contract drafting usually takes 14 business days from intake to final draft. More complex packages may take a bit longer, and you'll always know upfront what to expect.

  • Zābo Law is a Canadian law firm licensed in Ontario. The advice and documents we provide are grounded in Canadian law — specifically Ontario law and federal law where applicable.

If you're based outside Canada but your business operates in Canada, serves Canadian clients, or is incorporated here, there may still be a fit. Book a quick call and we'll be straightforward about what applies to your situation.

  • Zābo Law works with businesses of all kinds — consultants, coaches, course creators, artists, doctors, naturopaths, restaurants, retailers, creative professionals, and small-business owners across a range of industries.

The common thread is that these are businesses built around expertise and relationships. They work directly with clients, often sign agreements, and need a legal foundation that matches the professionalism of the business they've built.

If you're earning revenue (or hoping to), signing contracts, or building something you want to protect, there's a good chance Zābo Law can help.

  • Honestly? More than fits in a single FAQ answer.

The good news is that legal doesn't have to be overwhelming. Most business owners need to understand a handful of core things: how your business structure affects your personal liability, what your contracts actually say, how to protect your brand, and what your obligations are to clients and the government.

The best place to start is Read Before You Sign — Zābo Law's free newsletter for business owners who want to understand the legal side of what they've built.

Each issue breaks down one business law topic in plain language. No jargon. No scare tactics. Just the information you actually need to make smart decisions about your business.
